What this place is
Shusha was founded in 1752 as a mountain fortress of the Karabakh khanate. But it soon became more than a military stronghold — the main city of Karabakh and a cradle of Azerbaijani culture.
Great musicians and poets came from here; here the national opera was born and mugham resounded. No wonder Shusha is called the conservatory of the Caucasus.

The return
For twenty-eight years Shusha was beyond reach. On 8 November 2020 the city returned — and was soon proclaimed the cultural capital of Azerbaijan. Music sounded once more on the Jidir Plain.
About the liberationRevival
Today the city is being restored: residents are returning, mosques and houses are being renovated, festivals are held. Shusha is again becoming what it always was — a capital of culture.
