In 1992, during the First Karabakh War, Shusha came under occupation and for twenty-eight long years remained beyond reach for its residents.
All those years Shusha remained a symbol for Azerbaijanis — a city they longed to return to.

On 8 November 2020, during the Second Karabakh War, the liberation of Shusha was announced. The city's return became a turning point and a cause for nationwide joy.
As early as 2021 Shusha was proclaimed the cultural capital of Azerbaijan — and its revival began.
