Shusha is, above all, music and the word. Here mugham melodies were born, poetry resounded, and the foundations of Azerbaijan's national art were laid.
Culture
Great musicians came from Shusha: Uzeyir Hajibeyov, the founder of Azerbaijani and the whole East's opera; the singer Bulbul; the mugham master Khan Shushinski. The city gave the country a whole galaxy of performers.
Every spring the Kharibulbul music festival is held on the Jidir Plain — a celebration named after the flower that grows only here.

Culture
Shusha gave Azerbaijan great poets. Molla Panah Vagif was not only a poet but vizier of the Karabakh khanate; Khurshidbanu Natavan was a poetess, a khan's daughter and a generous patron.
In 2021 the Vagif museum-mausoleum complex reopened in Shusha — a sign that the city's poetic memory is returning.
